The forgettable 2010 VMAs

http://thatgrapejuice.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/vma-2010.jpgThis past Sunday was the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (aka the VMAs).

Unfortunately for me, the live airing took place during the same time as the Dallas Cowboys season opener on Sunday Night Football, which was all during the same time as the first airings of both the True Blood and Entourage season finales,(talk about a night of TV!) so I ended up watching the VMAs in pieces.

Football was our prime concern, as hubby couldn't miss the game and wanted to watch it on the bigger TV, so I sat and watched and followed the VMAs via your Twitter posts! We also flipped over to them during halftime and caught about 15 minutes or so before flipping back to the game and then watching the later reruns of True Blood and Entourage. By the time those were over, we caught the last hour and a half or so of the VMAs encore. I waited up for the next rerun, which started at 3am, and caught up to what I saw during halftime as I literally fell asleep watching it.

The only part on TV that it seems I missed was Taylor Swift's performance, which I caught online earlier today.
Florence + the Machine performs a balletic rendition of her hit "Dog Days Are Over" during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

When we first switched over during halftime, I got to see the still hot Jared Leto introduce newcomer Florence and the Machine as she and her group performed - it was a pretty good performance, although it reminded of the scene in 300 with the oracles, albeit a more upbeat setting.

By the way, I'm not sure how I feel about Jared Leto's hair - the bleach blonde look but with his dark roots showing... I vote all dark or all blonde - the two-toned thing... I'm not sure about.

Lady Gaga accepts her Best Pop Video Moonman dressed in Armani at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.
We also got to see Lady Gaga accept one of her 8 awards while wearing her 2nd outfit for the night - a black leather gown which appeared to be very heavy as she had to have a few guys help her walk around in it! Hubby was like "Holy crap! Is that ALL leather?? No wonder she has people helping her walk - that must be heavy!" She looked kinda like a black leather rhino with the spikey headpiece.

I also loved the appearance of Chelsea Handler's assistant Chuy whom we saw during this time. Chelsea appeared to be somewhat drunk though, which isn't surprising as anyone that's ever watched her show on E! knows how addicted she is to vodka - especially by Belvidere.

When we caught the last half of the show later on, Drake was performing with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz - can't say we really paid too much attention though as I've never really heard much of Drake's stuff or Swizz Beatz.

True Blood's Joe Manganiello (aka Alcide) and Rachel Evan Wood (Louisana Vampire Queen Sophie-Anne) presented the professional awards - hubby commented that Rachel Evan Wood looked hot and hinted that maybe I should dye my hair my red like hers, lol... Chelsea Handler got in a jaccuzzi on stage with the cast of Jersey Shore, and then Modern Family's Sofia Vergara presented the award for Best Hip Hop video - she looked stunning and beautiful as always!

B.o.B., Bruno Mars, and Paramore did a medley of sorts - Hayley Williams showed that she can't really sing and walk at the same time, as her vocals for Airplanes were wavering as she walked along the stage.

Justin Bieber got the viewer voted Best New Artist award - considering the hordes and hordes of teen and pre-teen fans he has, it'd be shocking if he didn't win as these girls are like obsessed with him (I can't figure out why - he's like 16 and looks 10 and really needs some one to fix that hair of his - he's got like the non-balding version of Trump's combover going on!). I swear, his fans will gladly welcome early arthritis in their fingers for all the texting and clicking and they do for this kid!

Linkin Park performed their new single The Catalyst on an outdoor stage. I used to be the biggest LP fan 6-10 years ago... but yeah, what happened? Their first album was great, but then they started changing their sound on each album... their 2nd album was okay, the 3rd I didn't even buy as I only like 2 or 3 tracks on it and I have no intention of purchasing this new one. I don't get why they play this new single on the rock stations - it's not rock! It's a synthesizer and drums -where are the guitars?!

Cher presented the Video of the Year award wearing her barely covering outfit with the black leather jacket from her old Turn Back Time music video - she made the comment that back in the day it was such a big deal for her to wear and outfit like that, but how times have changed and it's now normal! Hubby was a bit grossed out by the outfit, as Cher's like what, in her 50s? and wearing next to nothing aside from a fishnet body suit with a black V covering her bits and a leather jacket. Gaga won the award and accepted it wearing a "meat dress" which undoubtedly pissed off PETA - hubby's reaction: "Is she wearing... meat? OMG I think she's really wearing a dress made out of meat!" See? He get's into the "what's Gaga wearing" game just like I do!

Kanye West closed out the night with a stupid song who's chorus consisted of the chant "Let's have a toast for the assholes/ Let's have a toast for the douchebags/ Let's have a toast for the scumbags, every one of them that I know/ Let's have a toast for the jerk-offs that'll never take work off..." I liked the contrast of the black and white stage with his red suit, but that song was just stupid.

I caught the beginning of the show a few hours later - Gaga won 2 of her 8 awards during the preshow which they reaired, one of which was for her "Telephone" collaboration with Beyonce, in which she declared "we did it HoneyBee!" making reference to the characters they played in the Tarentino homage of a video. She wore a pretty neat dress from Alexander McQueen's last collection and when she accepted her first award onstage for Best Female Video we got to see the crazy lobster claw shoes she was wearing under it - everyone was wondering how in the world she walked in those things!

Eminem opened up the show with a performance of his single "Not Afraid" which is actually a pretty inspiring song for him. Rihanna made a "surprise" appearance (was anyone really surprised though? I wasn't.) and joined him for their duet of "Love the Way You Lie." It was a good performance but I much enjoyed the last time Eminem opened up the VMAs years ago with "The Real Slim Shady" and had hundreds of look-a-likes walk in with him.

The opening skit with Chelsea Handler getting her butt smacked by all the rappers and even Lindsay Lohan was a bit dumb, but I found bits of her opening monologue to be pretty funny - I loved when she mentioned that the cast of the Jersey Shore was there and when people started applauding she was like "No! No! Don't applaud them! They're the reason MTV doesn't play any of your videos anymore!" Genius! Not sure if she was joking or not, but she did make mention to smoking some stuff with Snoop Dogg backstage prior to going on and feeling high as a kite, so that could explain why she seemed somewhat drunk or whatever later in the show!

Kim Kardashian creepily introduced Justin Bieber who performed outside and yeah... I still don't get his appeal and apparently, from what people were saying on Twitter, he was lipsyncing the whole time too - FAIL!

Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars won the award for Best Rock Video, which I guess it alright, although Paramore (which I swear the only reason they're popular is because of their songs in Twilight) was actually the only band I would somewhat consider to be rock - all the rest of the nominees in that category were more alternative than rock, but whatever... it's not like MTV really knows what's what these days in the world of music anyway...

Ke$ha was one of the people that introduced Usher's performance and she was wearing a dress made out of garbage bags that she claimed she got at Home Depot - how fitting, as she really is trashy! Usher's performance was pretty neat though - clearly he still has moves a decade or so later! Katy Perry and some chick who looked like an extra in Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" video named Nicki Minaj presented Eminem with the Best Male Video award. What exactly was Katy Perry's dress? Was it a see through top with a black design covering her bits or was it just flesh toned? I couldn't tell.

Taylor Swift debuts "Innocent," a song inspired by her infamous run-in with Kanye West, on stage during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. And now we're back to the performance of Florence and the Machine which I caught during halftime and I fell asleep soon after as it was like 4 or 430am.

I went online and caught the only performance I had missed which was Taylor Swift's. Her performance started out with an old fashioned TV screen showing her accepting her Best Female Video award last year and then Kanye West interrupting her and stealing her moment and then she broke into a song about a 32 year old person still being an "Innocent" (clearly a jab at Kanye). I agree with everyone - it was a tad over dramatic for her entire performance to be about him and what happened last year - Beyonce gave her her moment to shine to make up for Kanye's douchery and he had everyone including the President call him a jerk the few days after it happened - it's done and over with, get over it. She also had way too much makeup on and the flesh-toned slip dress she wore barefoot... not a good look for her!

It was an alright awards show - at least I wasn't screaming at the TV for the stupidity of the voters like I was during the MTV Movie Awards last Spring... It was nice to finally see a female like Chelsea Handler host it although having watched her show, she's been funnier. None of the performances were really amazing like Gaga's "Paparazzi" was last year and there weren't any "memorable" moments like the Kanye West/Taylor Swift thing from last year. Gaga again stole the show with her outfits though - I think she's one of the main reasons anyone still watches these shows, just to see what she's going to be wearing next!

Did you watch the VMAs this year? What were your thoughts?

  1. What rubbish, your are really negative. Lighten up! all u seem to do is take the piss and belittle there efforts, fair enough some of the things you said are true, but stop picking at trivial things. Easy to judge sitting on your sofa' ain't it. Next write-up you do comment on the fact that they can sing or that they did do what they did. Find the balance! You thought the show was a 'snoozefest', try reading the c**p your wrote! - Bez

  2. Hey, no one forced you to come here and read it - my blog = my thoughts.

Not to mention this post is over a year old and about the 2010 VMAs - I wrote one about the 2011 VMAs a few weeks ago here: http://pointme2theskyabove.blogspot.com/2011/08/2011-vmas.html

And by the way, spelling and grammar are your friends. If you're going to try and insult me, my opinion and what I write on my blog at least be intelligent about it and don't type like a 12 year old. Just saying! Otherwise, I can't really take you seriously.

Thanks for stopping by though! You gave me a good laugh =)
