30 Days of Me - Day 1: Your Favorite Song

To be completely honest, I don't have just 1 favorite song.

I've never been able to pick just one because I always seem to find another song that becomes my "new" favorite for the time being. I'm sure I've had hundreds of favorites over the past almost 26 years. I can't even go by the "most played" song on our iTunes because when I get a song stuck in my head or really like it, I tend to play it over and over and over again on repeat til it's out of my head.

I do have a pretty diverse taste in music though.

My favorite category would be Rock, which I tend to use widely as I also like bands that would listed under some of the sub-genres of Metal, Industrial, Hard Rock, etc. If you've been following Music Shuffle Mondays, you'll know that I often state which bands are my favorites when they come up.

I also got into Techno/Dance when I was in college, thanks to Chicago's Dance Factory coming back to the airwaves. It's nice "zone-out" music, as I can just throw on that station and kinda zone out and let my mind wander. I was also introduced to the sounds of Basshunter, who started spinning songs about Warcraft maps (DOTA) and an IRC chat bot named Anna and I really liked his stuff that I heard (although I much prefer the songs in his native Swedish than American - I *hate* the Americanized versions of his songs).

I grew up listening to "The Oldies Station" while I was in grade school, as I wasn't allowed to listen to the Top40 stations back then (my parents felt songs like Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" weren't appropriate for kid my age to be listening to) so I got exposed to a lot of the classics, as the station played songs from the 50s, 60s and even the 70s. They played the pop doo-wop stuff from the 50s, classic Elton John, and some of the darker stuff like Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues and others. While I don't listen to the doo-wop and other "feel good" stuff that station played, I do find myself listening to the Classic Rock station from time to time, which plays a lot of the Classic Rock songs that the Oldies Station had in their rotation.

I also occasionally listen to some Pop/Top 40 stuff - I'll admit, some of it is pretty darn catchy! Lady Gaga is currently one of my favorite pop artists, as her stuff is just so catchy you can't help but find yourself singing along and sometimes even dancing along with her videos.

But yeah, I don't just have 1 favorite song, let alone any favorites - there's just too many songs and bands/artists I like that I find it impossible to just choose one!

Also, I don't like country - unless it's the crossover stuff like Shania Twain, I'm just not a fan - not my cup o' tea! I also don't like most rap or hip-hop - I think the content is a bit over the top, as many of the songs are all about violence, booze, and talking about women being hos and such - I understand, a lot of the rappers and stuff come from an enviroment where that's how things are, but I prefer just not to listen to it. I do like some, I'll admit - I think Eminem can be pretty funny and I liked some of the older stuff like Run DMC and Sir Mix-A-Lot, but a lot of it... no thanks! Same with R&B - I don't mind the dance/pop stuff that some R&B artists may put out and I liked Boyz to Men back in the day as well as some of the Motown greats I grew up listening to on the Oldies Station, but in general, I'm not really into a lot of the R&B artists of the last few decades.

Do you have a favorite song? What are your favorite genres of music?

  1. I'm exactly the same. I have different favorites for different moods, and there are songs that have significant meaning to me, and those are favorites as well.

There's just to much good music out there to have ONE favorite song.

  2. I don't have a favorite when it comes to music. My tastes are so ecclectic. I like R&B, hip hop, rap, but I also like some country and classical. I like pop and some rock songs. But I guess I usually go back to hip hop most of the time so we'll call that my favorite.

  3. I'm with you on not being a country or rap and hip-hop fan. I don't listen to the radio enough, so usually the songs I like are ones that most people are sick of because they're over-played. I like Sarah McLachlan, Michelle Branch, Evanescence, The Fray, Hoobastank, and Maroon 5, among others, but none of them would I consider myself a true fan of, because I only know a few of their songs.

I don't think I could choose a favorite song, either. "Everybody's Fool" (Evanescence) and "Crawling in the Dark" (Hoobastank) come to mind. Then there are the songs from musicals. I love "Defying Gravity"--it's especially fun to sing. My favorite songs to sing may be "All You Wanted" (Branch) and "On My Own" (Les Mis). OK, I'm going to stop there before I get too carried away!

  4. I have no favorite song either! I have a top 5 of rotating favorite songs. If I had to choose, I'd pick "love will tear us apart"-joy division.

My favorite genre is indie rock and electro-dancey stuff!
