Last week we took Jay to the immediate care clinic Friday evening after I got home
from work, as when I picked him up from my mom's she said pointed out
that he had been scratching his scalp so much that he was causing it to
bleed and scab.
Turns out, my kid has fleas.
/facepalm
So yeah... we
think what happened is that the dog got em as her flea collar fell off a
week or so prior to this and she was rolling around on the carpet, scratching, etc... and Jay plays on the carpet, also rolling around so yeah... he probably got them that way. Found a few in my hair but not nearly to the degree that Jay has.
We've been fighting that battle this past week, washing our hair with the dog's flea and tick shampoo (which the smell almost made me nauseous at work the other night!). We also "bug bombed" the house last weekend to kill em all off but who knows... we might have to do it again.
My poor baby though... it's funny to say "my kid has fleas" but at the same time, makes me sad.

Phone Photo Fun Monday 07.02.12
Since I was pre-occupied with life last week and missed getting my post up, I'm sharing photos from the last 2 weeks here.
That big ugly bug was one I got stuck killing as I saw it during Jay's naptime and of course hubby was at work. It was soooo disgusting! It had like super thin daddy-long-legs type legs but it could fly! I had to use a chair just to be able to reach and then swat at it a bit to get it low enough for me to kill it. So gross!
Jay decided to hug Elmo - it was too cute not to take a few pictures!
I'm soooo glad he's starting hugging - mommy could really use some hugs these days!
He found a "new" way to play with his activity table /facepalm
Jay likes his Red Mango - yum!
My Influenster Mom VoxBox came in the mail finally!
Expect a post about what I got soon!
I painted my nails Indigo-Go Girl by Ulta.
Not a fan of how many coats I had to put on, but it did peel off nicely when I got tired of it!
Jay fell asleep in my dad's Jeep!
The female pitbull/border collie puppy we gave to a no-kill shelter.
The 2 male pitbull/border collie puppies we gave to a no-kill shelter.
These puppies are adorable! I'm soooo glad that they have a really good chance at being adopted to good homes! I can't thank my friend enough for all the help she was last week, contacting shelters for me in regards to the dogs that we had to do something with asap. If you're interested in any of these super friendly cuties, they are available for adoption at The Anti-Cruelty Society shelter in Chicago (unless they already found homes this past weekend!).
This is Lady Girl (aka Lady).
She's a border collie/lab/Australian shepherd mix, between 3 and 4 years old. She's such a sweetie and well-mannered dog, we were able to take her in with no problems at all. Jay is beyond thrilled to have a dog in the house and Tiger is becoming less and less territorial with each day as she comes to realize the dog isn't going anywhere, nor is she interested in hurting her. I took her to the vet on Friday and she seems to be in good health - no heartworms or fleas or ticks that the vet could see. She does have swelling real bad in one ear and a lot of yeast with bacteria and puss in the other ear that the vet gave us medicated drops to give her twice daily to massage into her ear canals and clean them out. We plan on getting her spayed in the upcoming months, but we need to save up for it first as we weren't planning on getting a dog so soon and we no longer qualify for the voucher. We also took her to the PetCo Grooming salon and they got her cleaned up real nice for us and removed the rest of the dead fur that kept falling off her after we gave her a bath.

This past Saturday hubby and I went to a wedding. I've known the bride since kindergarten, as we went to grade school and junior high together, hubby knew her from our youth group days at church. Her and her husband met their 1st year of college, almost 10 years ago. So glad that they finally got married after all this time!
This was my entree at the reception - a half baked chicken, with potatoes (underneath the chicken) and veggies. Hubby had the prime-rib cut steak. We were seated with an old friend of mine and hubby's from youth group and her husband (she was in our wedding and we try to get together with them at least once a year when they visit from out of state) and while we were seated further back, we were right next to the open bar, which was a-okay with us!
They had the local Moonlight Jazz Orchestra play for the reception music. It was neat, but not a lot of variety for dancing as it was mostly various types of jazz songs mixed with some swing. The band said they'd be there til 4am! We left around 10pm, when the majority of the crowd had fanned out as well. It was a fun time though - several other friends and familiar faces were there as well.

Meet our newest family member!
I realize I've been a bit absent recently here. The last 5 days or so have been a bit crazy.
I can't go into the exact details right now, but hubby's family is having a bit of a family crisis.
A lot of prayer for his parents and especially his little sister would be very much appreciated!
His father is in poor health (if you follow me on Twitter, you know I had mentioned he was in the hospital briefly last week) and his sister is only 13.
In the wake of all this mess we're trying to take care of, we have acquired one of my in-laws dogs!
She's very friendly and loves people - when we went in to get her she came running to greet us! Hubby and I haven't seen her since the last time we were out there, which was Christmas 2010, and she's taken to us just fine. She's a border collie/ lab/ Australian shepherd mix - so about medium sized. Completely house trained and about 3 and a half years old. Her name is Lady.
Jay is beyond thrilled - he LOVES playing with the dog at my parent's house, especially when my sis was still living there with her dog. We brought him home tonight, after cleaning Lady up real good, and he was sooooo excited to see a doggie, in his house. We were afraid of her attacking him, but instead of having to watch her, we had to watch Jay instead as he was going completely crazy over her, lol... he was tired too, as it was bedtime. I had put her in the dog carrier/crate while I got Jay ready for bed, just since she's not used to the house yet. I let Jay watch her as I got his bedtime yogurt snack ready - he sat across the hall from the face of the crate, staring at her and giggling and smiling, inching closer and closer til I had to tell him not to put his fingers in the crate, and he'd back up against the hall way and start the process over again, lol...
Once he was in bed I let her back out again and have been letting her roam the main living areas of the house on the main floor. She seems to be settling in just fine, having already taken a nap on the rug in the kitchen and rolling around the floors.
I forgot about her and Tiger though... she's used to cats as at one point my inlaws had an army of kitties in their house (okay, so it was like 5. Or 6. Still...). Tiger's not used to other animals, in her house though. The dog didn't know about Tiger so as she was exploring, Tiger popped out and scared her, making her run into some of Jay's toys, lol... and then Tiger proceeded to "guard" the family room by sitting on the bottom portion of the table near the hallway between the kitchen and the family room, going into defense mode and growling (yes, my cat growls). It's been pretty funny! At one point she walked a little too close near Tiger as she was following me to the family room (after Tiger had moved and let her check it out, lol...) and I had to spray Tiger with the water bottle before she lunged at Lady's thigh, lol... She seems to be calming down though, as she's back on her spot on the loveseat and dozing in and out while the dog lays around nearby.
We gave her a flea and tick shampooing and a good washing and brushing before bringing her in the house - poor dog, my sister in law couldn't remember the last time they gave her a bath other than "it was warm out." Sooo much dead dog fur came off her! I'm calling the vet in the morning to see if we can get her in soon to get her shots, license and just checked out in general - my inlaws lived out in the country and of course they didn't do any of that; us being in the city, she has to be licensed or we could get fined or in trouble. We'll get her spayed eventually (cuz again, they lived out in the country and didn't do that either) but since we no longer qualify for the voucher we can't afford it at the moment.
Considering the state of my inlaw's house (I'm not even joking when I say it looks like something you'd see on an episode of Hoarders) and the fact she wasn't being properly cared for (especially these last few days)
my mom said she probably thinks she died and went to heaven!
So we are now officially dual-animal owners =)

A look at this past week
So I realized I've been kind of scarce with posting this past week (I blame WoW) so here's a brief update on life.
Saturday morning I got up and went up to church for the annual Christmas women's luncheon they have every year called The Prepare Him Room where we eat a yummy dish, some dessert and listen to a guest speaker or 2. My mother-in-law and a friend of hers always put together a table for it each year as that's one of the highlights - a woman or a set of women each get a table to dress and decorate all Christmas-y. This year though, we had a decent snowfall Friday night and into Saturday morning (we got like 6 inches) and my in-laws live out in the country with a quarter-mile driveway that's a pain to shovel out in the snow. All my brother-in-laws were in town Friday staying with friends so the only one around to shovel was my 12 year old sister-in-law. They said she made a good effort, but they just weren't able to get out of their driveway, that's how bad it was out by their house! My mom and I still went to the luncheon but our table didn't have a centerpiece as my mother-in-law was bringing it into town with her - oops!
On Sunday, hubby and I attended his Verizon company's Christmas party which I had found out that afternoon I was allowed to go to too (previously they said no "dates" but an email went out Sunday afternoon retracting that). It wasn't great but I had fun getting dressed up nice and going out - it definitely beat sitting at home! I gave hubby my free drink tickets since I obviously can't drink (everyone got handed 2 tickets for alcoholic beverages). I did try a Virgin Bloody Mary but ugh, it tasted way too spicy and I couldn't drink more than 1/4th of it - Jay didn't seem to like it either. They also gave out door prizes - hubby (and I) won one of several $50 Visa giftcards - they were also giving out $25 BP gas cards and the grand prize was a phone.
Monday was kind of a crappy day for me.
Last week I had my glucose screening to test for gestational diabetes which is a form of diabetes that pregnant women can develop although it usually goes away. I "failed" the 1 hour version of the test so they had me come back in and do a 3 hour version (where you fast the morning of and they draw your blood and then draw it again every hour for 3 hours). Monday I got the results from that and turns out I have the gestational diabetes. It wasn't too much of a surprise as it seems to run in my family on my mom's side (my mom was borderline while her sister and mom both had it like I do) and they said at my last appointment that Jay is measuring a big bit for his gestation age which is common for women that have the gestational diabetes, but still... it sucks. I got a call today from the Maternal Fetal Medicine ward at our hospital to set up an appointment for next week to meet with a dietitian/nutritionist and schedule an ultrasound so we can get my gestational diabetes under control. I've started watching what I eat even more than I was going off outlines for it that I found online and started keeping a food log too so they can go over with me what I'm eating that I shouldn't. I keep telling myself, I only have to deal/suffer with it for 10 weeks or less... I just need to get past the holidays and all the sweets/cookies I have to miss out on this year =(
On top that, I was frustrated as my mom's been busy the last few weeks doing all the costuming for our church's Christmas production of A Christmas Carol this weekend and it seems I've been having the worst time trying to reach her lately and The Children's Place didn't need me to come in again - I guess things have been so slow out at the mall that they've called and cut my last few shifts and didn't need me to come in for my on-call/call-in shifts, which is a little frustrating. To top everything off, I couldn't find the shirt I was looking for and broke a nail in the process. Hormones got the best of me and I had a little bit of a breakdown (I hate when that happens!). Fortunately hubby came home from work soon after and insisted I snuggle with him, which helped me calm down.
The rest of the night turned out okay - we went to Best Buy to pre-order the new WoW expansion and I bought a wireless mouse for my laptop since I figure if I'm playing WoW on it, I'm going to need an actual mouse as the Dell trackpad is different than the Mac one I'm used to playing on. I ended up getting WoW later than night and taking advantage of the Expectant Mother parking they have at Best Buy and played the new expansion well into the morning, sleeping in late Tuesday.
A few packages arrived Tuesday and Wednesday. I had ordered this Holly Lites aroma melt warmer from Partylite as it's normally $20 but was listed as an internet special this month for $10 and goes great with our Christmas decor - now I'm just waiting for my Iced Snowberries aroma melts to come in so I can start using it. My dad's Christmas present also arrived too so I got that wrapped and put under the tree.
Speaking of the tree... I think Tiger's retarded this year. This is her 3rd Christmas with us and she's acting like she's never seen the Christmas tree before and won't leave it alone! She keeps knocking ornaments off (none of the breakable ones, thank God!) and stretching up into the tree... I don't get it! She was so much more behaved around it last year, this year she's a complete terror! And she doesn't listen or learn as we keep spraying her and putting her in "time out" in her crate/cage/kennel when she keeps it up!
Today was a so-so day. I was up late last night/this morning as I've been playing WoW while hubby is at work and he's been getting home about 4am lately. I was going to go to bed at 430am but made the mistake of checking Facebook one last time and got to chatting with a friend and yeah... time flew and next thing I know it's already 530am! I was in bed by 6am and I needed to get up by 930am as I thought I had work, however it took me a good hour or so to fall asleep (Jay's been kicking A LOT more lately, as it's clear he doesn't have a lot of room in there now). Anyways, I got up around 930am, ate something quick and showered and drove all the way across town to work. They didn't call me yesterday so I took that to mean it was okay to go in. Well, I was wrong - I walk and one of my bosses is like "Didn't we tell you last week we didn't need you to come in this week?" What she had said was that they weren't sure if they would need me and since they had called all the weeks before when they didn't, when I didn't get a call I took that to mean it was good for me to come in. I left promptly, a bit annoyed, but whatever. I had errands to run anyway so if anything it just made me get out of bed and dressed to get out and get em done.
Stopped by my mom's house for a bit to pick up tickets to the church Christmas program tomorrow and we ended up going out to hubby's Verizon store so my mom could look at a few phones she was interested as our plan has 2 upgrades available, Best Buy has some 6 day special where you can get decent smartphones for free or $1, and we have some promotional thing hubby put on our family plan where everyone gets the $29.99 data package for $9.99. My sister is getting the HTC Droid Incredible (it's $1 at Best Buy right now) and while my mom was planning on getting the LG Octane, the price on that one went up from $29.99 to $69.99. While she can use the internet on it, we learned that the GPS on it is through the VZ Navigator (since it's not an Android phone) which costs extra to use, so I got her looking at the LG Ally since she really wants a phone with an actual full QWERTY keyboard (she's iffy about full touchscreen phones like I originally was), would like to be able to use the Google Maps Navigation (she thought it was neat that I used my phone as a GPS when we drove to St. Louis and back to pick up our car after the accident), and would like to be able to check her email and Facebook from her phone since she doesn't always have time to get on the computer to check that stuff so she sometimes doesn't get an email or message for days at a time. She also wants a decent sized screen as she's getting old and wants to be able to store baby photos on it to show off to people and put her music on it too. It's currently free at Best Buy too. Hubby agreed with me, an Android phone would be best for her and the LG Ally is about the size she wants and has the keyboard too, so he showed her one of those. While he wouldn't recommend the Ally for someone more tech savvy, he said for my mom it would work just fine for her and her needs. He said she'll need a car charger if she's planning on using the GPS so he said he would get her one at cost for $5.
I stopped into Hobby Lobby to see if they had any Christmas-themed coasters as our Vegas ones don't really match our Christmas decor and I only found 2 in sets of 3 and wasn't thrilled about either. I found one I like on Zazzle, but they're sandstone ones and cost $9.99 EACH! A set of 4 Christmas-y coasters for under $10 is ideal... I guess I'll check Walmart next week. I also picked up my paycheck from The Children's Place and learned that I actually had 2 checks to pick up AND they totaled more than I was expecting to get! That was pretty sweet! Also, the mall was REALLY dead/slow for being 2 and a half weeks until Christmas - no wonder they keep canceling my shifts out there! I stopped by the bank on my way home and got stuck behind some guy in a truck doing 25-30mph in a 45mph, I'm assuming due to the snowfall that started this afternoon. Granted, the snow was covering the roads so you couldn't see icy patches as easily and was coming down pretty steady, but it wasn't THAT bad to be going THAT slow!
In hubby news... he got a mini-promtion/pay-raise at Verizon - he's now an assistant to the executive administrative of their company, although really he's not doing much more than he already was, he's just getting paid for the extra stuff he's been doing. He also found out this week that he got the 2 week Christmas overtime shift at UPS he was hoping to get. Sadly though, we learned tonight that one the dogs at his parent's house (they have multiple dogs and cats - it's like a mini zoo out there! lol...) suddenly died - it was their smaller dog named Boy and he was only 7. When we've talked about getting a dog of our own in the future, hubby always says he wants one that's a lapdog about the size of Boy. One of his brothers is pretty bummed out.
And that's been my week.

Flashback Friday: Man's (er, Woman's) Best Friends

Throughout my life, pets have always had a part.
We've had several over the years - dogs, a guinea pig, fish, hamsters, and even cats.
![]() |
Rusty trying to steal my cookie. |
I didn't really mind Rusty and was a bit sad and confused when he was no longer with us. I remember he had left him with my grandma at her house in Pennsylvania and I was told he had runaway. Later I learned that he had died or something (maybe he did runaway at first) but they never bothered to tell me that when I was little of course!

Me and Lady |
I forget how long we actually had her, but she grew pretty fast and was constantly knocking my 2-3 year-old self on my butt which I didn't like and would cry about and my mom was frustrated with her as she was trying to potty-train me as well as a dog that refused to learn. It got to be too much and we find a nice family that owned a farm or something who was willing to take her.
We got Bitsy - a black and white miniature fox terrier - right before my 5th birthday.
![]() |
First day of kindergarten or 1st grade with Bitsy all excited, running around. |
Eventually we ended up visiting some family on a farm who's dogs had recently had a whole litter of puppies they were selling. Mom and dad let me pick out our new puppy. I remember they had divided the litter in boys and girls and we wanted a girl. Most of the puppies were all jumping around, yipping for my attention, but I noticed one off in the corner by herself, a little smaller than the others and decided I wanted her. We learned that I had picked the runt of the litter and mom and dad asked me if I was sure that was the puppy I wanted, in which I said I yes. We had a cardboard box lined with old towels that she rode home in with us as I sat next to her in the backseat and reached in and petted her the whole way home as we thought up names.
I came up with Bitsy, as she was so little and itsy bitsy.
She grew a little bit, but never really got "big" - she was definitely a smaller terrier and the definition of a "yippy" dog, lol...
I accidently broke her leg when I was little one winter, as Bitsy liked to get under your feet and chase you around. I didn't mean to, but I was skipping down the main hall of the house and well, she got under my feet and I accidently stepped on her leg and broke it! Oops! It healed though and she was fine.
As she got older though she had more serious health problems - she had trachea problems and also a heart murmur for the last half of her long life and it was finally a tumor that ended up making it so we had to put her down.
I was in college when it happened. My dad got up one morning to feed her like usual and she started having a really bad seizure so they took her to the vet immediately and it was the tumor that had caused it. She was starting to die and it was recommended we just put her down and put her out of her misery as it was only going to get worse for her. Our vet was amazed though at how long she lived - I believe she was right around 15 years old! He said most runts don't make it past the first few years if that and that it was probably due to our love and care that she was able to live a long life like she did.

We also had some smaller animals.
My childhood best friend had gerbils and while my parents didn't want something that small at the time, they got me a guinea pig instead. I named her Wilma (from the Flintstones) and she was okay, but a little boring. When we moved into the house my parents still live in, her cage got moved to the rec room in the basement. We had her for quite awhile though (I forget how many years), before she died. It was sort of my fault too, as I was in charge of feeding her and well, I got busy with activities at school and just never went in the basement that week... we found her just under her waterbottle which was empty... I felt really bad! But I was still in grade school at the time too.
We didn't get any more smaller animals for awhile.
I was in junior high when my parents let me and my sister each get a hamster from the pet store. I named my brownish-orange and white one Scully (I was hooked on the X-Files back then) and my sis named her female black and white hamster Baby Jimmy (lol, don't ask!). We originally had them in smaller cages, although we soon learned that mine was pregnant and my dad brought up a bigger glass aquarium to house Scully and her babies. She had 6 of them, but one ate one! I kept the runt which was a boy, and then we took the remaining 4 (2 boys, 2 girls) back to the pet shop. I had them for while. Scully died after breaking her little leg - we think her foot got caught in the metal wheel that was in her cage. She died in my arms later that day as I held her and petted her. Sometime before Scully died, her son (I don't remember what I named him) somehow climbed out of the glass aquarium and lifted up the lid and snuck out in the middle of the night. Bitsy found him and must of scared him to death, as my sister woke up the next morning screaming - Bitsy had left him in the middle of the floor of my sister's room, his fur all a mess from being in her mouth and he was stiff and dead. There was no blood though - we said Bitsy must have thought he was a squeak toy and he probably had a heart attack due to being carried in a larger animal's mouth! My sister's hamster lived the longest and died a natural death I believe.
In college, when I first moved into an apartment with my friend who became my long-term college roommate, we decided we wanted a kitty so my roommate went out to the shelter and found a really cute grey and white domestic kitty she named Hermione. She was just a baby still, and very small so we got to see her grow up into a cat.
Growing up, as you can see, we had dogs, and the guy I dated for several years in college, his family had several dogs too that I was accustomed to, so a cat was something new. My sister was more of a cat person growing up, as she had a bit of an obsession with them for awhile and we had to decorate her room and stuff with cat images. Mom wouldn't let her get one though, as she just didn't want a cat in the house breaking stuff, etc. I had played with cats at summer camp growing up, but never actually owned one so living with one was a new experience.

Hermione when she was just a little kitty. |
Our 3rd roommate wasn't too fond of Hermione, often yelling at her and throwing her around, despite the fact she had agreed and was fine with us getting a cat in the first place. We're also positive she had reported her to our landlord, as our lease technically said no animals, however half the people just in our building unit alone had cats. We were fined and had to send her with a friend at a different apartment unit for 2 weeks, but brought her back in once we realized the landlord didn't actually care and was never going to follow up and see if she was gone.
I remember bringing her home with me for Christmas one year, as all 3 of us were going home and couldn't leave her by herself for a week. She stayed in my bedroom for most of the week and it worked alright - my little sister being thrilled we had a cat in the house!

Tiger! |
Tiger's not as affection as Hermione (while she'll fall asleep at the edge of the bed near my feet, she'll never curl up in my lap and do that! lol...) but she's still a pretty good kitty! She just turned 2 a few weeks ago and we'll have had her for 2 years in the beginning of December.
We recently saw Hermione when we visited my old roommate down in Dallas - she has a Corgi now though and Hermione isn't too fond of the dog. She said she still knocks her water dish over though (something we never understood in college - she'd rather knock the dish over and drink the water off the floor than in the dish!). Once I let Hermione check me out though she seemed to remember both me and hubby and warmed up to us rather quickly! It was cute!
