First Haircut & First Walker

Some more firsts for Jay this week!

Last Monday he had his first haircut!

I know some babies that don't get their 1st haircut to closer to their 1st birthdays, however Jay had quite the baby mullet going on (I'm sure it could have rivaled Billy Ray Cyrus' in his "Achy Breaky" days!). Hubby's mom brought her hair cutting stuff with her when she came for her weekly Monday visit and went ahead and cut it. I wasn't there - unfortunately I had to work that night, but hubby took video of it and it was quite amusing! Jay freaked out, like it was the most traumatic thing ever! He *really* did not like the cape she put on him and stopped fussing for a moment when she went to get the buzzer, but royally freaked out again when he realized she was putting it to the back of his head! LOL...

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/281487_10100177676556859_30800316_45973134_5850788_n.jpgWe also finally got him a baby walker after taking forever to find one I liked that didn't have a buttload of toys on the tray (I swear it's impossible to find just a plain simple walker with nothing on the tray like the one I had as a baby!). He seems to enjoy it - at first he didn't realize he could move himself around in it, and now he's figured out how to push himself backwards - still hasn't really figured out going forward yet though! He's only used it in the alley way of the kitchen so far - we need to order a gate for our stairs, which he can't get to from the kitchen and we supervise him the entire time he's using it. It seems to have been a good buy though!

Jaydran Jump Up!

At my baby shower, one of the gifts my parents got me was a Johnny Jump Up as there's photos of me when I was a baby, having a blast in the thing (my sister on the other hand apparently hated it, lol...). Mom thought it was a must-have and had to get it for me.

Unfortunately, we didn't use it right away as there was no good place in our apartment for it, not to mention Jay was a tad too little to really do anything with it. When we moved we weren't really sure where to put it either, as there's not really many places in our house to put it.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/263178_10100168522222219_30800316_45814862_2526551_n.jpgWhen we left Jay with my parents for a few days last weekend though my mom bought one for her house and hooked it up and apparently he really enjoyed it! I made an effort to figure out where we could put in our house and narrowed it down to our bedroom doorframe and Jay's bedroom doorframe, as there's not really a lot of doorframes in our house to use it on!

He seemed to enjoy it the few times we've used it on our bedroom doorframe so far - today even he played in it for like a half hour, chewing on the cover that covers the metal bar frame and having a quite the conversation with me this afternoon! It was pretty amusing!

He can't really jump much yet, but he enjoys swinging around from it and dangling his legs, lol...

Also, today I swear he was trying to give me a kiss as he put his lips to my cheek and just held them there for a moment or so before pulling away. It was really cute!

I also *finally* got to see him flip from his tummy to his back! He's been doing it for about a month now but never when I'm around! Unfortunately though, he did it while he was on his changing table - doh!

We're in Elmo's World now!

I mentioned briefly in my Easter update that my mom got Jay an Elmo for Easter but I didn't mention just how much he seems to love the thing!

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230668_989076770369_30800316_45151347_5205517_n.jpg
Jay loves his Elmo - you can tell he's smiling!
Anytime it's within arm reach of him he's holding onto it, hugging it, gripping it... it's too cute! He also grins really big and laughs when you do the Elmo voice and sing the Elmo's World song ("La la la la, la la la la, Elmo's World...") - he LOVES it!

We first saw it in Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago when I was out at the mall, walking and window shopping. I stopped in to see about a few more board books for Jay and I spied him starring at something on the shelf from his stroller. I looked and noticed a bunch of Elmo's on the shelf. To be sure that's what it was he was looking at I picked on up and brought it towards his face and he grinned! It was $16.95 though and I was already spending too much money that day so I figured maybe someday later on I'd go back and get it for him. I also mentioned it to my mom and she said she'd try and see about getting it for him for Easter. When she went back to get it, it was the last one on the shelf!

She brought it out for him at Easter dinner on Sunday and boy did his eyes get wide and his face lit up! It was as if he remembered it from weeks earlier! Too cute!

So right now, we think this stuffed Elmo (which is just bigger than half his size! LOL) might be his "special" toy - you know, the doll or blanket you got attached to as a kid and had to take everywhere!

Things Our Kids Will Be Clueless About

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S38v5P_J4bI/AAAAAAAAAJw/mw1r8Sd4oxE/s1600/flashbacklogo.jpg
Last week, a friend on Facebook posted a highly amusing status that got a bunch of us reminiscing about old school video games and gaming consoles.

http://jscustom.theoldcomputer.com/images/manufacturers_systems/Nintendo/NES/363069nintendo-nes.jpg
His original status:
3 kids in a used game store yesterday:

Kid 1: holds up NES cartridge "HAHA, what system is THIS for? Like... P.S.? Like before the PS1?"

Clerk: "No man, thats for NES, you've never heard on an NES?"

Kid 2: "Well, does it have good graphics?"

Clerk: "Well, it has good graphics for an NES game."

Kid 3: holds up N64 cartridge "They had NBA games in 1998!?"

All 3 kids: COD:BLOPS COD:BLOPS COD:BLOPS COD:BLOPS
Some of the comments to the status included:
I don't walk around picking up Commodore 64s all like "Hey man wtf is this like a Windows 0? Like Before Windows XP!? They had computers in the PAST!?"
or "A joystick? What's that?"
I'd have been all like "Yeah, and you have to blow on it to make it work too! Even though it wasn't even ever proved whether blowing on it helped or not."
I told hubby about it too and he had a good laugh!

Hubby and I often stop and think sometimes about how certain things we remember and grew up with are going to be completely foreign to Jay and our other future kids.

Some of these things include:
  • DOS
  • Floppy Disks
  • Cassette tapes
  • Walkmans
  • VHS tapes (although we still have a few as well as a DVD/VCR combo player)
  • Vinyl records
  • Having to manually turn a knob to change the channel on the TV
  • Telephone's with the circular dial to dial numbers (I hated those!)
  • Laser discs
  • How "rare" and special it was to see a 3D movie
  • Phone books and yellow pages - most places have a website to look up that info or you can get a number from someone's Facebook profile
  • Writing a letter by hand and sending it via "snail mail"
  • Disposable cameras and the joy of waiting for the film to develop only to realize you forgot to use the flash in half the photos!
  • Pay phones
  • Physically going to a video store to rent a movie or video game
  • Polaroids
  • Waiting all afternoon, listening to the radio just to hear your favorite song so you could record it on a cassette
  • A wristwatch (all phones have a clock on them, making wristwatches just a piece of jewelry these days)
  • Going to the library and checking out books for research papers
  • Dial-Up internet

Can you think of any others?

Memorable Christmas Gifts of the Past

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S38v5P_J4bI/AAAAAAAAAJw/mw1r8Sd4oxE/s1600/flashbacklogo.jpg
Since Christmas is right around the corner, this week's Flashback Friday post is devoted to memorable Christmas toys/gifts.

One of the first Christmases I can remember I got quite a bit of toys, including a red tricycle that I road around the house that first morning as well as my brown Fischer Price cassette recorder.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2FwYPzNeQw80zV7EA_HGq6wp9czv0RY7_hx2g5YHP4YieYSnIaOmRXj3Mv91gZMgTCGVecRqdfw05fkR7XSVVpwztTP9Q2ebN5s8WkJKtgQYK4lFyaXFTds3zg3JtWSM6qfIZA1njzdRw/s1600/nes-console.jpgAnother memorable gift was the year we got a Nintendo game system. I've mentioned it before in various posts on here - my childhood best friend and her older brothers had a Nintendo at their house that we would play often and since I had an interest in video games, when an older cousin got a Nintendo he sent us his older Atari system, but it just wasn't the same. The Nintendo system we got came with 3 games - Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt (with the gun controller) and a track and field game that worked with the Nintendo trackpad.

http://www.retrojunk.com/img/commercial-thumbs/play-doh3_982-0003.pngI also remember getting quite a bit of Play-Doh sets over the years - I LOVED Play-Doh and back in the late 80s/early 90s there were plenty of sets you could get to make all sorts of crazy Play-Doh creations! I remember one of the sets I had was Burger King set - it came with a Play-Doh "grill" to make burger patties and fries and there were the stamps to create lettuce and tomatoes... I had too much fun with Play-Doh!

I loved coloring books too so every year Santa would bring me some. One year he really confused me though as he brought me a whole stack of new coloring books, however some were duplicates! I didn't understand why Santa would do that and then I started to feel bad, thinking that some little kid out there was some of their coloring books because Santa accidentally gave me multiples! Oops!

http://www.babble.com/CS/blogs/strollerderby/image.jpgOne big gift I got in grade school was my American Girl doll Samantha. As I've mentioned before, at one point in school, American Girl dolls were all the rage at school. Us girl were always checking the books out of the library and reading them together in our freetime. Some would bring their dolls to school... at the time there were the original 3 - Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly - and they had just added Felicity. Kirsten was the more popular one at school and me always having to be a little different, I wanted Samantha instead - I loved her Victorian style and stories! My parents got her for me for Christmas one year and I was thrilled!

Another memorable gift was the year I got my stereo in 5th grade. We actually have amusing video footage of this one as my dad (or "Santa" to my sister) played a prank on me with it. I had opened all my gifts and it wasn't there, despite me not having opened a "big" present yet (my parents would get us 1 big, more expensive present that we really wanted each year). As we opened presents in the living room, my parents told me to go retrieve the stockings that hung on the mantle between the kitchen and family room. I didn't really want to, but I did anyway and I think my sis followed. As we went to go get them, we both noticed a big large box wrapped in the middle of the family room. I knew that had to be my big present, but my sis, being the little 3 year old she was at the time, insisted it was hers. My dad, who wrapped it, had forgotten to put a gift tag on it, which only led to the feud as my sister insisted it was her present despite what anyone told her. She then began to fight with me over opening it, getting all upset when my parents told her to let me do it. I unwrapped it and sure enough, it was a box with the stereo I wanted on it. I opened it up though and there was an older junk radio in the box! My dad thought it was funny - turns out he hid the actual stereo somewhere else in the house! lol...

What memorable Christmas gifts have you gotten over the years?

The Beanie Baby Craze

 http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S38v5P_J4bI/AAAAAAAAAJw/mw1r8Sd4oxE/s1600/flashbacklogo.jpg
In 1995-1996 I was in 6th grade. This was the year I remember the Beanie Baby craze really hitting hard!

http://www.beckersbakeryanddeli.com/images/Cakes/Beanie%20Babies.JPGI forget how it started, but I'd like to say I remember a friend of mine started getting them, as her parents had got into the craze and were buying them up like crazy and reselling them. She had a few. I wasn't too big on the basic teddy bear ones, but I did think some of the animal ones were pretty cute and I remember I started buying them too.

I only had a few to start with but ended up collecting a handful of them that filled up a shelf in my old bedroom closet at my parents house -I had many dogs, cats and an assortment of others. By now I think all the ones I have are retired.

Looking at the official Ty Beanie Babies site, it's fun scrolling down the list on the side and looking through all the retired ones - I see many of mine, and many of the hard to get ones that I remember hearing about back then.

I had Sly the Fox, Bernie the St. Bernard, Cubbie the Bear (Blackie was the original bear but was retired by this time), Doby the Doberman, Nanook the Huskie, Patti the Platypus, Pounce and Snip (both cats), Squealer the Pig, Tiny the Chihuahua, Ally the Alligator and Weenie the Dachshund among others. 2 that I still have with me here at our apartment are Smarter the Owl, which I got for my high school graduation (he has my high school graduation tassel attached to him and resides inside a mug with the names of the people in my graduating class on the outside of it) and Hope the Praying Bear. I also have 1 of the 2 bulls (Snort and Tabasco) that were big back then - I forget which was retired first, but I had the later one

http://www.ty.com/images/products/331_lg.gifI also have Speedy the Turtle, which is a special one to me, as I have a neat story as to how I got him. Back then, I listened to a lot to a nearby "we play anything" station that played everything from current top 40 songs to classic rock and metal with Dr. Demento on Sunday nights - probably one of the best radio stations (and it was run out of the town where I went to college) and I was thrilled when it was brought back for a few years while I was in college. Anyways, during the height of the Beanie Baby craze near the beginning of 7th grade, they had a week/weekend where they were giving away some of the harder to get Beanie Babies. I think you had to hear a particular song or soundbite played and then be a certain caller to win. I had been trying all week and eventually I finally got through and won! They only had 3 left to give away and gave me my option of which one I wanted and I picked Speedy. He arrived in a padded manila envelope about a week or 2 later with a letter from the radio station congratulating me again on winning. It was really neat and was a special moment for me.

I remember my friend had a handful of retired ones - like I said, her parents would buy multiple of one at a time and then once they became retired they'd sell the extras for some extra cash. Considering how crazy got over the things, it wasn't a bad way to turn a profit!

http://bubel.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/beanie-babies.jpg?w=840
Looking at the Wiki, it's no surprise why people went nuts over these things - not only were they cute and collectible but each one had it's own name, birthdate and little poem/story on the tag. The whole "retiring" aspect of them after so much time only added to their collectible-ness. They were also reasonably priced - I remember the average price was something like $5.99-$7.99 so a kid could easily save their allowance and get one fairly often. They were also sold at smaller, specialty stores rather than big places like Walmart, Target, etc. - out here, the gift shop inside Cracker Barrel was the place to get to them. They usually got a shipment once a week or so and had at least 10 different Beanie Babies you could choose from. At the height of the craze I believe they started limiting how many you could purchase at time (I think it was 5 per person per day) just so buyers like my friend's parents didn't buy them all up the second a shipment came in. I remember though, someone's parent at school would leak when the new shipment came in and which ones the store was supposed to be getting in and we'd rush over to try and get at least one of the newer ones.

I noticed while over at my friend's, they've placed some of her old Beanie Babies throughout her son's room for decoration - that's actually not a bad idea and pretty cute, I might have to do that with Jay - put them somewhere where he can enjoy them too (although maybe when he's a little older so he doesn't rip off the tags, making them worthless, lol).

Did you get into the Beanie Baby craze? Which Beanies did you have or which ones were your most memorable?

My friend Alphie the Robot

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S38v5P_J4bI/AAAAAAAAAJw/mw1r8Sd4oxE/s1600/flashbacklogo.jpg
Earlier this week my jaw about dropped as I saw on a TV a commercial for the new and improved Alphie the Robot toy by Playskool.

My jaw dropped because I had the classic 80s version of this toy (dubbed as Alphie II) and the fact that they gave him up an update and recently brought him back was just... shocking! To be honest, I had nearly forgotten about the educational plastic robot toy that I loved so much as a kid, so seeing him incarnated again on TV nearly 20 years later was a nice welcome!

http://www.computermuseum.li/Testpage/AlphieII.jpgOriginally introduced in the late 1970s and running on batteries, Alphie was a great educational toy for young kids as he came with different learning cards you could slide into his compartment and he would ask you different questions regarding the images on the card in which you would respond by pressing the different buttons next to the images on the card. Alphie would tell you if your answer was right or wrong. It was a pretty impressive toy for that era!

The original Alphie was blue and when the Alphie II was introduced in the 80s he got a little bit of a makeover - the 80s version (Alphie II) is the version that I had growing up.

http://www.theoldrobots.com/images19/alphie53.JPG http://cache.io9.com/assets/resources/2007/12/Alphie.jpg

I loved my Alphie robot - he taught me about letters, shapes, simple math, and colors.

http://www.hasbro.com/common/productimages/en_US/37c4291a19b9f36910bfec1ba496d865/37D587DA19B9F36910960AA87BB9F427.jpgThe new 2010 version of Alphie has had another makeover, making him look a more modern and less "box-y" with a handle on top (I always carried him around by the arm-like handles he had), and comes with 30 cards (I think mine had 10 or less) and now sings in addition to having an electronic eye panel to help him interact more and seem more like a real robot.

I'm hoping to find my Alphie II somewhere at my parents house, although (now costing twice as much), we might just splurge and get baby Jay the new 2010 version at some point.

Did you have a Robot Alphie as a kid? What do you think of the new version?

The fascination with crazy colored hair dolls and their little naked butts

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S38v5P_J4bI/AAAAAAAAAJw/mw1r8Sd4oxE/s1600/flashbacklogo.jpg
Originally known as Leprechauns, but also referred to as Dam dolls, Gonks, Wishniks, and Norfins, we simply called them Trolls or Treasure Trolls.

Who would have thought a scary fantasy creature such as a troll would be widely popular with young kids throughout the decades?

Before the Beanie Baby outbreak of the mid-90s, there was the Troll craze. Different stores in the mall would carry various Troll dolls, all with different colored hair and cute, clever outfits - there was a troll dressed for every season and almost any activity a kid could think of!

http://www.adorablekidsdressup.com/Cloud%20Nine%20Images/Troll_Dolls/trolls_case.jpg

I remember I had a whole shoebox full of these guys! The first one I ever got had yellow hair, however I did have the ever popular Rainbow Hair Troll too.

 http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/mom2brenkae/DSCN5607.jpg http://s4.hubimg.com/u/940351_f260.jpg
http://cdn1.ioffer.com/img/item/295/288/52/2233_1.JPG

http://vintagegameworld.com/images/Treasure%20Trolls%20G148.jpgThey also created larger dolls with outfits you could interchange with other dolls (I sometimes used Cabbage Patch Kids clothes, as they fit!) - I had one that was like a ballerina. I also had the troll pencil toppers that caused plenty of fun at school! There was also the Treasure Trolls game - I forget the point of it, but it came with 4 mini troll dolls (about the size of the pencil toppers) and since we didn't play the game much, I just put them in my shoebox with my other troll dolls!

Did you know that Trolls were originally created in 1959 and besides being popular in the late 80s and early 90s, they were also popular in the 60s and 70s? They also made it onto the Toy Industry Associations's Century of Toys list too!

In 2005 there was a short-lived and failed cartoon series called Trollz, and apparently it was recently announced by Dreamworks that a Trolls movie is in the works as well.
