Book Club Friday + eBook Giveaway!

Joshua Johnson is the author of "Gunpowder Fantasy" The Cerberus Rebellion (released this past July in eReader formats) and the creator of the Griffins & Gunpowder universe. When he isn't working or spending time with his family, he writes novels, short stories and novellas.

He currently lives in Northern Illinois with his wife (that's me!) and young son.

Gunpowder Fantasy combines elements of Epic Fantasy (magic, elves, mythical creatures and vast scale) with rifles and railroads.

About The Cerberus Rebellion:
One hundred years of peace and prosperity. War changes everything.

On the world of Zaria, Elves, magic and mythical beasts coexist beside rifles and railroads. The futures of two nations hang in the balance as rebels and revolutionaries trade gunfire with loyalists and tyrants.

Eadric Garrard was raised to believe that as the rightful King of Ansgar, his loyal nobles and fearful subjects answered to his every whim, no matter the cost or consequence. His decision to send his troops thousands of miles away will test that fear, and loyalty.

Raedan Clyve was ordinary until an Elven ritual involving a griffin's heart turned him into something more. Twenty years later, he still struggles with the magics that rage through his body. His mentor holds him back from his full potential and he faces pressure to find a suitable wife and father an heir.

Hadrian Clyve has picked up where his father left off and works to expand his family's influence amongst the Ansgari nobility. His aggressive negotiation of alliances and shrewd choice of marriage agreements has earned him respect, and resentment. When his King calls his troops to arms, Hadrian has other things in mind.

After a century of scheming and decades of preparation, Magnus Jarmann is ready to bring his family's plans to fruition by launching a war of independence that will free his people and return his country to its rightful place among the nations of Zaria. The King's call to arms creates an opportunity that Magnus cannot afford to miss.

In a war, little is held back; in a revolution, nothing is safe.

Readers who like Game of Thrones, World of Warcraft, The Lord of the Rings  should definitely check out The Cerberus Rebellion and the rest of the Griffins and Gunpowder Universe!

In addition to The Cerberus Rebellion, Joshua has written several Griffins and Gunpowder Universe short stories (all currently available for purchase on Amazon Kindle ) and has agreed to let me giveaway 1 .mobi, .pdf or .epub copy of the short story of your choosing! Easy Canvas Prints giveaway

Ever since moving into our new house I've been spending a good amount of time (and money!) making it look nice and homey. And I also love pictures and displaying them around our home as well.

Tara's giveaway couldn't come at a better time!

On her blog - Fabulous But Evil - Tara is giving an 8x10 Easy Canvas Print canvas of your choice. What Easy Canvas Print does is take an image of yours and puts it professionally on a canvas.

I first saw these when we were getting married and a lot of photogs offered them as an additional product to your wedding package. I thought it was a neat idea but they were ridiculously expensive so I never bothered. But, Tara's giving one away for free! Can't beat that!

And I say it's perfect timing for us too as this month our church is taking family photos for the new, updated church pictoral directory and we plan on having ours taken for it - it'll be our 1st professional family photo with Jay. I want to get a 8x10 portrait of it to display in our home, but having it on a canvas might be even cooler! Or! My mom had painted canvas prints of my sis and I done when we were babies - might be cool to have one of Jay to continue the tradition.

Regardless, if you're interested in entering in the giveaway also, go to Tara's blog and follow the entry instructions. It's open until June 8th! Good luck!

So about this book...

I forget how, but not too long ago I started following the blog geek with curves. Amy is a female geek, often writing about comics, Star Wars, fantasy books, and all other geeky things you would expect! I've read and seen some pretty neat stuff on her blog and I highly recommend checking it out!

Anyways, she recently posted about this really interesting fantasy book she acquired - Catherynne M. Valente’s The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making - and it sounds really interesting! It's about this girl named September and her adventures in Fairyland.

She's also giving away a copy of the book! Hubby and I both enjoy reading and now that Jay sleeps through the night and I'm able to have some time alone at night I've been getting back in the habit of reading more frequently, so I'm all for acquiring more books!

Check out her post about the book and giveaway to learn more about both!

I'm a winner!

I'm so excited - I won a blog giveaway!!!

I've entered in a few before but wasn't lucky enough to win the grand prize. This time around though, I won 1 of 4 prizes up for grabs!

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm61/badassgeek/hardrock_02.jpgThe other day, the Badass Geek posted about a giveaway he was doing in which a reader with connections to the Hard Rock Cafe wanted him to plug an upcoming show and had some free swag for him to giveaway - some nice aluminum Hard Rock Cafe water bottles! He made it really simple to enter the giveaway and so I figured why not?

I won one of these neat red ones (which you can see to the right), which I figured I can store somewhere in Jay's stroller or diaper bag and take me with when we go for walks this spring and summer!

I came across the Badass Geek's blog early last year - I believe I was surfing the blogrolls of some friends on 20-Something Bloggers to find blogs that appealed to me in order to increase my own blogroll and saw that several followed a blog called the "Badass Geek." Intrigued by the title, as I'm a bit of geek myself, I decided to check it out. He posts some really amusing, humorous stories about his daily experiences ranging from things that happen at home and work to just public places in general. I was hooked and had to add him to my own blogroll! Another neat thing is that him and his wife are expecting "Baby Badass" later this spring, so that's another thing in common, which he sometimes posts about as well.

Be sure to check him out - if you're like me in the least bit, you'll be hooked!

Music Shuffle Monday 06.14.10 & MK Fun in the Sun giveaway winner!

http://www.veryicon.com/icon/png/Media/iPod,%20Therefore%20I%20Am/iPod%20Mini%20Blue.png1. "Duck and Run" by Three Doors Down
This is off their debut album "The Better Life" which came out my sophomore year of high school and EVERYONE knew who Three Doors Down was. This whole album was actually pretty good and this is a pretty good "driven" song with a pretty good message to it about not "ducking and running."

2. "I Like It Rough" by Lady Gaga
I got her debut album "The Fame" and aside from the singles, a lot of the rest of the album was hit or miss. This is one of those songs on the albums that it's just too catchy and the lyrics are just ridiculous but funny and the beat is pretty darn catchy too. This is one of Gaga's songs that I like to torture hubby with while he is at work by texting/quoting the lyrics to him, lol... bad, I know!

3. "What You Waiting For?" by Gwen Stefani
I remember first hearing this one in college when I still lived in the dorms. I was all excited cuz it was Gwen's solo debut and it was pretty catchy and fun and the video had an Alice in Wonderland type feel to it. I was kinda disappointed at how random the rest of the album was when it finally came out though - there were very few songs on it that I actually liked, this track being one of the few.

4. "Crawl" by Breaking Benjamin
This is a track/album I acquired on my iPod when I merged me and hubby's music collections together onto his computer (all my music was on my laptop so I moved it over so it's all in one place). Honestly, I haven't really listened to this album, but this song sounds like typical Breaking Benjamin.

5. "Engel" by Rammstein
I first was introduced to this song back in high school. Prior to this song, the only Rammstein song I knew was "Du Hast." This song was on the Mortal Kombat: Annihilation soundtrack (BTW, terribad movie, AWESOME soundtrack!) - a guy I was friends with in high school had a handful of CDs he rotated in and out his Firebird's stereo and this was one of the 5 that was part of the regular rotation. If you like Rammstein, you'll like this one. Oh and Engel is pronounced like "ein" and means "angel."

And now, the moment some of you have been waiting for...

The winner of the Mary Kay Fun in the Sun giftset giveaway!

Just like last time, I kept track of the entries via spreadsheet in the order they were submitted and used the number generator from www.Random.org to determine the winner.

And the winner is....

Congrats!

I can't find an email address on your blog, so I'll be contacting you via direct message on Twitter (or feel free to send me an email via the one attached my profile here) so we can get this mailed out to you by the end of the week!

Thanks to everyone that participated in this giveaway and sorry to those that didn't win this time - stay tuned though! There will be more giveaways in the feature!

6.06.2010

It's that time again...

As promised, I said I would do another giveaway when I reached my 200th post.

Well readers, this past Flashback Friday was post #200!

Because I have one to giveaway, and in lieu of summer being here, I've decided to do a Fun in the Sun beauty and skincare giveaway!

What's included?
  • A Mary Kay Sun Travel Set, which includes a clear zippered pouch, 1 sample size bottle (1 fl. oz.) of the SPF 30 Sunscreen, 1 sample size bottle (1 fl. oz.) of the After-Sun Replenishing Gel, 1 sample size tube (.09 oz) of Nourishine Lipgloss in Beach Bronze (I wear this color often!), and 2 plastic refillable bottles for other liquids you may take while traveling.
  • A full size tube (.33 fl. oz) of Mary Kay Waterproof Mascara
  • A full size tube (.17 fl oz.) of Mary Kay Island Bronze Eyesicles
This is a $24 value, yours free just for winning!

Whether you're going somewhere warm like to the beach, or just to the local pool or even sunbathing in your backyard, this'll help kept you from getting burned while looking great!

I really LOVE Mary Kay's products and am excited to get to share some with you! The Eyesicles are a really neat product, as you can use it as a primer or just put it on and go, adding some bronze shimmer to your eyes; and I LOVE the lipglosses - especially that color! It's a brownish color no doubt, but it's not bold, it just adds a touch of color to your lips, I love it!

Sorry to the guys, as this is more of a girly giveaway, but still feel free to enter - the sunscreen and after-sun replenishing gel can come in handy if you plan on being outside at all this summer, plus there's 2 refillable travel bottles and the clear plastic zippered pouch to keep it all in - plus it's free and you can even give the beauty goodies to your wife or girlfriend or even your mom or sister! They'll love to try these products!

Even if you already follow, without letting me know you want to be entered I have no way of knowing to include you.
Winner will be chosen at random via the Random.org generator and announced on Monday afternoon, June 14th. All entries must be received by Noon (cst) that day.

Happy entering!!

1st Giveaway Winner and World PvP

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S6kDD58AjvI/AAAAAAAAAKg/al0aeux5keA/s1600/warcraftwednesdays-logo.gif
And now for the post you all (well okay, some) have been waiting for...

Finding out who the winner of my 1st Blog Giveaway - a $25 Amazon.com Giftcard, in celebration that it's been 5 years this month since I first started playing World of Warcraft!

I got called into work today and like I mentioned on Twitter, I was planning on doing this when I got back, but since no one's at the office and it won't even take me an hour (probably not even 30 minutes) to do what I need to do there, I figured I might as post this now, since I have another idea for a post in my head that I plan on making tonight.

Anyways, here's how I picked the winner:
What I did was I created a spreadsheet, listing the info of each person that entered as they entered, and for each way they entered I put their information in again, in order of how it was submitted (for example, if you made 4 entries, then went back later and made the 5th after others had entered, the 5th entry was split up from the others). Then I went on Random.org, entered in the max number of entries (20), and hit the button to generate the winning entry number!

And the winner of my first ever blog giveaway, celebrating 5 years this month from when I first started playing World of Warcraft is....

Kara from Crayons and Cylons

Congrats and enjoy your gift card! I'll plan on sending it later tonight (when I get back from work and running errands) to the email that's listed on your blog, unless you tell me otherwise, okay?

Sorry to rest of you, but thanks for entering! I got plans for another giveaway coming up soon - a summer giveaway for the ladies - as I reach my 200th published post (we're currently in the 180s!).

**************
Now, onto to today's Warcraft Wednesday post:

A lot has changed in the 5 years since I started playing World of Warcraft - one of the most notable changes being the inclusion of Battlegrounds (aka BGs).

WoW without Battlegournds? No way!

Yes way!

And it was AWESOME.

If you play on a PvP server, you are always "flagged," meaning that at anytime a player of the opposing faction can sneak up and kill you while you're doing anything. On RP and PvE servers though you have to manually "flag up" via typing /pvp to attack an opponent outside a Battleground or Arena setting (Wintergrasp being the current exception). If you enter a city or village of the opposing faction though, you will get automatically flagged and the NPC (Non-Player Controlled) mobs will start attacking you.

Back in the day, before Battlegrounds, we had some pretty awesome, memorable matches on my server.

Regularly, if you visited the Hillsbrad Foothills, near the tower in the center of the map you could find a battle going on - this was known as the ongoing battle for Tauren Mill and Southshore.

http://method.undo.jp/sb/img/img221_WoW55.jpgThis was my first experience with PvP, as a huge group from my first guild was going to join in the epic battle one afternoon. I was only in my low 20s, but it sounded fun, I heard of it before from my boyfriend at the time who was a higher level than me and had experienced the fight before and I wanted to see for myself. I got directions - get to Wetlands (I had been there before), go north through the pass into Arathi Highlands and then west into Hillsbrad - stay on the path as much as possible.

I wasn't very effective, as most of the horde players were higher level than me, but there were a few other lower levels than me there, so we banded together.

It was a lot of fun.

Another old school World-PvP event was the time a large group of the Horde decided to try and take over the Dwarven Loch Modan, which is a zone surrounding a large lake.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20071104181118/wowwiki/images/thumb/d/dd/WorldMap-LochModan.jpg/501px-WorldMap-LochModan.jpg

They had been going through the smaller Alliance towns for a while this evening and while traveling, I saw the notification that Horde were in the area and attacking our Alliance members. I informed my guild members in guild chat, a few spread the word in some of the major cities, and within 10 or 15 minutes, there was a giant group of us Alliance countering the Horde's efforts to take over the Loch. We ended up fighting most of the battle in the middle of the Loch, on one of the smaller islands, with crocolisks and kleboids attacking both of us every so often.

Eventually we overthrew the Horde, sending them home and the battle was won. It was a fun time and lasted for a good half hour to an hour once everyone got into it!

And another memory, the time the Horde decided to take over the Alliance tram system.

In order to even reach the tram, you have to run in one end, cutting through either Stormwind or Ironforge (2 of the main Alliance cities) to get there. Once inside though, so long as you and many in your group didn't die, the Horde could freely take on the Alliance without NPCs interfering. Dying sucked though, as it was a long trek back - especially if you died on the Ironforge end but you were sent to the Stormwind graveyard! While many gave up and decided to just let the Horde run amok in the tram passageway, several of us, myself included, continued to chase them down the path. It eventually ended in a mutual way, both sides calling it quits, but it was a fun evening and the Horde posed for some fun pictures in front of the passageway that's under some body of water (the Loch Ness monster lives there too!).

Once Battlegrounds came out though, World PvP became less and less, only really happening when someone wanted to attack the major capitol cities, as everyone was spending hours in queue to join BGs such as Alterac Valley (AV) and then spending an entire weekend just to play one server wide match (which was always epic - oh how I miss the days of an AV that lasted at least 48hrs!). People would get in Friday night, and play on til Sunday! It was insane!

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_utpn85k5ndo/S6kDD58AjvI/AAAAAAAAAKg/al0aeux5keA/s1600/warcraftwednesdays-logo.gifJust the other day, I realized - it's been 5 - FIVE! - years this month since I first started playing World of Warcraft. Now as for today's Warcraft Wednesday post...

The other day a friend post a link to these babies on my Facebook wall.

I had a good laugh, but since hubby and I play both horde and alliance we'd have to get both banners and $30+ for one is just too much for a silly banner, not to mention we have nowhere currently to hang them, so it'd be better to wait til we have a house and a gaming room to get those and hang em up!

Also, while browsing around on the site (ThinkGeek.com) I found these and about died laughing:

Yes, that's right - actual mana and health pots!

Apparently they're like energy drinks, but the concept is actually pretty amusing, that someone thought to make these a reality. I'm tempted to order 1 set of each just for posterity! As mentioned above, I found you can also purchase the mana ones on Amazon.com.

Have you opt'd in for the WoW Cataclysm closed Beta yet? I did!

From a Blue Poster on the Cataclysm WoW forums:
Get those opt-ins ready for the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm closed beta! The sundering of Azeroth is nigh, and you don’t want to be left out in the cold of Northrend when you could be enjoying the sun-drenched beaches on the goblin isle of Kezan. To ensure you’re opted-in and eligible as a potential candidate, you’ll need a World of Warcraft license attached to your Battle.net account, have your current system specifications uploaded to the Battle.net Beta Profile Settings page, and have expressed interest through the franchise-specific check boxes.

So get your opt-ins set up, updated, and ready; we're worgen real hard to get the beta going soon!
It honestly took a whole 30 seconds and that was because I was distracted by something on TV so I didn't click the boxes as fast as they popped up, lol...

Hubby told me the other day that it's currently in Alpha, so Beta should be this summer which means that the expansion should be in the fall - plenty of time for us to set a little money aside each month to get me a spanking new laptop to play on!

My roommate in college got into the Beta for Burning Crusade and let me play on her account a few times just to check it out and then hubby and I opt'd in all of our accounts (1 in my name, 3 in his although one of his brothers primarily plays the 1 account but was a minor when hubby set it up for him) and hubby got 3 - 3! - Beta invites for Wrath! Of course he kept one for himself and gave me one. He toyed with selling the third on ebay but decided to give it to a WoW friend of ours that we meet up with in person from time to time as he's from nearby (and was in our wedding).

I never do *that* much in the Betas, as I'd hate to level up all the way only to have to do it all over again, but it is neat to roam around and check out all the new zones and get a feel for the starting quests so you're a bit ahead of the rest on launch day when it comes to knowing what you're doing and where to go. Also, with the Wrath Beta it was fun to finally try out the Deathknight Hero class too!

I'm hoping at least hubby or 1 get into the Cataclysm Beta, as I can't wait to check out the new Goblin and Worgen races and see for myself how all the original zones I loved so much in Vanilla have been altered!

http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2010/may/ss1314.jpg

There's also going to be some major changes to professions in Cataclysm, one of which includes that they're getting rid of the specialized professions (for example, in alchemy you could do a quest to gain either Transmute Mastery, Potions Master or Master of Elixurs). I'm kind of annoyed by this, as the specialized alchemy quest chain required a lot of time farming mats and spending money on some of them too.

This sound kind of cool though - adding a friend through Real ID (aka email address)
To add a Real ID friend to your friends list, one of you will need to know the others email address. When you add someone as a Real ID friend, a request will be sent to the person you invite and they'll need to accept the request before you can see their information (character, server, etc.) in your friends list.

Your email address is not displayed in the friends list, and not visible to friends of people you are Real ID friends with.

Just think, by the end of the year, it'll be here!
